The
Biafra Memorial Project (BMP) is the harbinger that will
herald the dawn of an era of Igbo renaissance. The Igbos,
as a nationality, were edged out of the center stage of
the national political arena because of the issues that
surround Biafra. The BMP is the leading edge of a set of
programs that will restore respect and dignity to the Igbo
nation as well as enable Ndigbo to begin to focus their
future plans in ways that will guarantee that the they will
never again allow a repeat of the horrid experiences of
the past 30 years. The Biafra Memorial Project will consolidate
the unity of the Igbo nation by creating monuments and symbols
that will immortalize the struggle that we collectively
endured in order to preserve honor and the inalienable right
to live free in our ancestral homeland. -

The
proclamation of Biafra was marked by wild ecstasy amongst
the generality of Easterners who, for the first time in the
past 12 months, felt that they have found something concrete
to hang their future hopes on. Overall morale was sky high
and the new nation was predicted to become the showcase of
Black African ingenuity in all aspects of human endeavour.

New
Igbo Leadership Needed
Because
of the unique cultural heritage of Ndigbo, it would be unrealistic
to expect that our collective interests will be best articulated
by a group of select elites or chieftains as are the practices
in the North and West. The less-than-adequate role that the
Ohaneze Ndigbo has played toward filling a leadership void
for Igbos is self evident. ...-

Reparations Valid - Ohanaeze
Ohaneze
Ndigbo has reiterated its preparedness to defend the reparations
bill of $8.7 billion that it had presented to the Federal
Government via the Oputa Commission. At the conclusion of
one of its recent meetings, the secretary of the apex Igbo
organization, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, asserted that the demand
for reparations is “legitimate and irrevocable”.

Strategic
Interests of Ndiigbo
The
strategic political interests of Ndigbo should be reflected
at the local, regional and national levels. It will be a daunting
task to optimize Igbo political interests in the Nigerian
Federation if a regional operational agenda is not first evolved
between the core Igbo states and the neighboring states of
Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta. For Ndigbo
to maximize their economic potential, they need a direct unimpeded
access to the Atlantic shores. ......-

Without any arsenal of armaments to rely on, Biafrans prepared
to ward off the invaders with anything that they could lay
their hands on. Machetes, Dane guns, spears, bows and arrows
were brandished by irate but determined citizens who trooped
out in thousands to demand to be sent to the warfront to
repel the invaders. .....
